Tutor Training Workshops: Workshops for both new and experienced tutors focus on a number of teaching elements including small group facilitation; giving effective feedback; underlying processes and theories behind problem-based learning. Please visit the upcoming events webpage for a complete listing of events.
Individual orientation for new tutors is also available by appointment and can be arranged by direct contact with Sam Kennedy, PhD at: Academy@hms.harvard.edu
Recognizing that support for teaching requires rewards as well as training, the CTL recognizes those tutors who have received outstanding evaluations from their students. Together with the Center for Evaluation at HMS, the CTL identifies those tutors who exhibit excellence in tutoring. Tutors are awarded with a Certificate of Excellence in Tutoring issued by the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Dean for Medical Education. Each recipient is also included in the Annual Teaching Awards Program issued in May of each year.

Help you understand what is expected of a tutor
Describe types of questions that will be useful in any tutorial
Give you strategies for dealing with difficult tutorial situations(including where to turn for help if you need it)
Throughout the guide, we have chosen to include quotes from HMS students to “put a voice” to the points being made in the text. All student quotes are used with permission from focus groups we conducted regarding the tutorial process.
In some cases, we have also chosen to include tutor quotes to lend another perspective; almost all of these quotes (with a couple of exceptions noted) are taken with permission from an extensive set of interviews we conducted with experienced HMS tutors. Our sincere thanks go to the students and tutors for sharing their thoughts and wisdom with us and allowing us to pass that along to you.
